Issues and Movies and MusicThe Bakla Review: Daybreak
The Bakla Review is one of the most incisive gay-related Pinoy blogs dedicated to commenting on movies and videos. The reviews are both serious and fanciful, that’s why I love it. It recently reviewed the gay indie film Daybreak and gave it an “A-” grade. I quote:
… the question most pertinent to Daybreak is the position of gay relationships/marriage in a larger society. Isolated from the rest of the world, a gay relationship can be a beautiful, powerful thing. But with a wife or a girlfriend or a lifestyle of multiple partners waiting outside, why does it seem natural for gay affairs to take a backseat in priority?
Good question, a very, very good question. What do you think MGG folks?

sa tingin ko as a gay themed movie this is actually good. hindi naman kailangan lagi ng chorvahan o kakaibang twist to make it meaningful. so far of all the gay theme movies produced in the phils this one makes most sense.

haven’t seen the movie yet. but going into your question, gay affairs do take the backseat in priority because of the “norms” of the society, that the man-and-woman relationship is still the right one. dammit! but i am thrilled that the Filipino community has now become more open-minded than it was before. thanks to the media!

I’m not sure if I got the question right, medyo nakakalito for me, but I think the reason is obvious. Gay relationships take a back seat versus wives and girlfriends dahil gays just ‘meddle’ in straight relationships. We position ourselves as the 3rd party from the beginning because we idealize straight (or straight-looking) men. The more accepted and the more mainstream gay relationships are, the more normalized it will be at dadami na’ng healthy gay relationships. A gay-straight male relationship is doomed from the beginning dahil, obviously, it’s one-sided, mas gusto ng bading ang derecho.

the story could have been better. i think it wasn’t well-developed. the script might have been rushed.
the film was trying to copy a bit of ang lee’s style (in brokeback mountain) by focusing on the sceneries (blinds, mist, etc.) but i think it did not work as well since it made the film dragging.

i watched daybreak kagabi lang and mGnda sana yung film dahil sa takbo ng story. it’s not just another gay film na puro nota at kalibugan. maraming pwdeng maka-relate lalo na yung mga bading na they think that they have a beautiful love story but in the end mauuwi rin pala sa wala. but at least in the movie, william and jp had a wonderful night. mga bakla, aminin nyo maganda yung movie, dun sa mga hindi nagagandahan, hindi kayo marunong magmahal! gusto nyo kasi puro one night stand lang! hahahaha! and the theme song nag-iisa wala ka na by noel cabangon ay nagpadagdag ng drama sa istorya at sa tensiong nararamdaman ng dalawang bida.

I asked a friend of mine in Makati to buy me a DVD of “DAYBREAK” and sent it thru a relative of mine coming back here in Canada.
Ang GALING ng Film! Excellent ang gawa ni Director Alix, at very AWARD-WINNING and performances nina Paolo and Coco.
You have to hear the dialogue very well to see the inner beauty of the film. Because if you don’t listen to the dialogue you will not appreciate it. You will also then realize that nakakaiyak pala ang film na ito and very touching.
How I only wish that Director Alix did not anymore make an alternative ending and instead made the ending na bumalik si Paolo kay Coco. In that way, the film would have a happy ending.
