IssuesSame-sex Marriage in California

I-Witness’ Sandra Aguinaldo goes all the way to California to join Filipino gays and lesbians who will soon be enjoying the right to be called legally married. Watch the this documentary at I-Witness, airing on Monday, June 30, 2008.
“AKO LEGAL PARTNER!”
Sandra Aguinaldo’ I-Witness Documentary
Airing Monday: June 30, 2008
The Supreme Court of California approved the same sex marriage act just last month, causing thousands of gay couples throughout the state to register for their upcoming weddings.
California is now the gayest state on the West Coast and only the second U.S. State to have legalized gay marriage. While other states recognize domestic partnerships, they do not grant the term “marriage” for same sex unions.
I-Witness’ Sandra Aguinaldo goes all the way to California to join Filipino gays and lesbians who will soon be enjoying the right to be called legally married.
She documents the gay community in Los Angeles as they celebrate this triumph at their annual Gay Pride Parade. Here, Sandra meets Mia Adriano, a Filipina lesbian who tied the knot with her American lover last week, in a Church ceremony while wearing a traditional barong tagalong. The two had already been living together for six years.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, gay entertainer Thage Guinto is busy preparing for his upcoming wedding to fiancé and domestic partner Stephen Kramny Jr. Sandra follows Thage as he searches for a wedding cake, plans the hotel reception and prepares his Vera Wang wedding gown!
In the meantime, conservative and religious groups in California are lobbying hard against gay marriages. They are trying, through a referendum this November, to put a gay marriage ban into the state constitution - which will invalidate the court’s decision.
Be a witness to true love, gay or otherwise, this Monday late night when 2008 New York Festivals and US International Film and Video Festival Silver Medal Awardee Sandra Aguinaldo presents “Ako Legal Partner!” on I-Witness.

TITA GLO: The first state was MA.
The Philippines is too conservative and 90% Catholic so I don’t see gay marriage being legalized anytime soon.

You know what?
Only Catholics are against us Gays and Lesbians and many other transexuals… they can’t accep our humanity or whatever we have and whatever we are… they’re so stupid! Pinoy ako and I deserve my Right as a human pero they keep on saying that Dalawa lang binuo ng Diyos at Lalake at Babae lang! FUCK THAT!!! I’m a human too and I deserve to be treated as One! Punyeta sila, mga pa-epal, khit sa “CANISTER SCANDAL” they can’t accet us Gays, and that’s so stupid! sila kaya maging bakla then we’ll not accet them, diba masakit yun??? they didn’t think about that.!
I’m only 14 years old pero bakla at humihingi ng respeto at pagtanggap mula sa kahit na sino!.. okei??? I just hope they’ll accept us for what we are and for what we deserve…

Meron bang Pinoy-Pinoy couple who’s gonna get married? Jaycee, hindi lang Catholics ang anti-gay. As far as I know, a lot of religions are. Episcopalian yata is more open to it. There’s a major global divide going on now between their anti-gay and pro- sides which is seriously threatening to permanently tear apart their religion. Buddhist at Taoist I’m not sure pero wala namang pakialam yata sila whether bading ka o hindi so their neutrality may be, in effect, pro-gay.

Very well said Jaycee. I believe each one of us has a purpose. No being is created without any purpose. They fail to understand that.

I hope that the government will consider or even attempt to study the implications of same sex (LGBT) marriage without framing themselves based on Catholic values.
First, this would give gays the opportunity to nurture their relationships and become responsible partners (i.e., practicing monogamy, safe sex, investing on conjugal properties).
Second, while this does not guarantee for a monogamous relationship, I believe this would allow gays to look forward to a their long-term/life-long commitment rather than hopping from one relationship to another.
Third, this would safeguard and protect the rights both parties and will benefit from the social services provided for as Filipino citizens (i.e., SSS pension, Philhealth, and other benefits). No matter how small the amount, at least it would supplement the income of the couple in cases of emergency.
There are hundreds and hundreds of reasons to consider — politically, socially, economically. I just presented my case as someone who looks forward to get married with the same sex in the future.

if catholics cannot accept the church’s teachings on sexuality and homosexuality its better for them to leave the church.
the church should not conform to people’s modern beliefs and public opinion. it is not a people pleaser. it is not a political party or politician who needs to be popular by pleasing its consituency.
(by the way, the church of england/episcopalian/anglican was formed so that Henry VII of England can remarry. such as holy beginning indeed!)

I saw in TV Patrol (I think), that group of Catholics, Single for Christ (SFC), are campaigning to ban or rather wanting to retract the approval of this act this coming election. The sad part about this is that they (SFC) are Filipinos. I do understand that it is not written in the bible and all, but is it written in the Holy Book that it is forbidden to love? Is it a crime or a sin for that matter to show how you feel for someone? Sorry but I think and believe that these people are very narrow-minded. I respect their opinion, and I think they should respect us. It’s been long overdue, gay people needs respect, acceptance and appreciation in the world that all of us live in. We all breathe the same air. Eat almost the same food. Walk in the same roads. But how come, we can’t have the same rights?
Emotional? Yes, i am very emotional. It is because the fact that it is my own race who would want to take away something that may complete my life? Sad sad sad. But i guess that’s how really life goes, you cannot have everything. For me, I’ll try my best to be the best person, a good citizen and a model to other gay people.
Just an opinion.
