An afternoon of Queer Cinema with Martin Manalansan

Everyone is invited to attend an afternoon session with Filipino-American professor-writer Dr. Martin Manalansan IV during the Film 178 Queer Cinema class sessions.

He will discuss his paper on Miguel/Michelle and return migration, and will entertain a Q&A on queer cinema and queer theory in general.

This event is free and open to the public.

MARTIN F. MANALANSAN IV is associate professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is interim director of the Asian American Studies Program and affiliated faculty in the Gender and Women’s Studies Program and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory.

He is the author of Global Divas: Filipino Gay Men in the Diaspora (Duke University Press, 2003; Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2006) which was awarded the Ruth Benedict Prize in 2003. He is editor/co-editor of two anthologies namely, Cultural Compass: Ethnographic Explorations of Asian America (Temple University Press, 2000) and Queer Globalizations: Ethnographic Explorations of Asian American (New York University Press, 2002) as well as a special issue of International Migration Review.

Presently, he is Social Science Review Editor of GLQ: a Journal of Gay and Lesbian Studies and the co-chair of the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists.

    yes, his book Global Divas is published locally by the Ateneo Press. He’s a nice person too. Definitely not an intellectual snob.
