The Rainbow Connection

I’m sure that you have at least once listened to this beautiful, beautiful song: Rainbow Connection, written by songwriters Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher for The Muppet Movie (1979). In the film, it is sung by Kermit The Frog as the Muppets set out to find adventure. The song establishes that Kermit was a thinking frog, and that he has an introspective soul. The songwriters also wanted to show that Kermit would be on this spiritual path, examining life, and the meaning of life.

While listening to Sarah Mclachlan’s version of the song, I was struck not only by the simple yet beautiful melody, but moreso by how it resonated with my gay core. Specifically, towards the end of the song, it talks about these “voices”:

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I’ve heard them calling my name. Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors. The voice might be one and the same. I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it. It’s something that I’m supposed to be.

I would imagine that the songwriters actually referred to the adventure that The Muppets would undertake. But for me, similar to that of Kermit The Frog’s spiritual journey, it can mean my journey to the depths of self-knowledge, my journey to accepting who I am at the core, and celebrating it as a fundamental part of my person — “…something that I’m supposed to be.”

Through the song, I am also reminded how this blog, the Migs persona, and the so-called Manila Gay Guy pseudo-phenomenon, have helped me connect with the very diverse gay community, comprised of the same folks who perhaps have heard the same “voices”. With MGG I have managed to interact and learn from a lot of different people, and without even intending to, have somehow influenced people I never even imagine I’d connect with. “All of us under its spell. We know that it’s probably magic.”

I love, love, love this song. “Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers and me.”

The Rainbow Connection - lyrics:

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard
and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it’s done so far.
What’s so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell. We know that it’s probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors.
The voice might be one and the same.
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It’s something that I’m supposed to be.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

I always associated this song with Kermit The Frog but I have to admit I had a crush on Sarah M for a while. For me she is a local girl who made it big internationally. Of course so many other diverse artists including Lea Salonga performed this song. I’ve seen Lea’s rendition on YouTube when she was a small girl a while back. I always thought of this song as homage to discovery, tolerance and diversity. What could be more diverse than a love between a frog (Kermit) and a pig (Miss Piggy). But now, thanks to you, Migs, I have a new association with this song, which is Migs of MGG. Merci beaucoup mon bel ami.

…the rainbow universally symbolizes the “gay community” (period) whose colors are as diverse as the people it represents! gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender! Its ssso clear! …no need for the connection!

  12. Blonde_skinny_bitch Says:

…the rainbow concept! accdg to gay-history-101 is from “The Wizard of Oz” the story of lost Dorothy trying to find her way Home with those magic Ruby Slippers! …which parallels the lives of any gay person trying to find their “Home” or a community where they can feel welcomed! ;)

….so if you happen to see a huge rainbow flag waving and greeting at you in any large metropolitan US city or anywhere! rest assure “YOU are always welcome there! coz as the song goes….

…”if happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow!!!! …why? oh why? can’t I” …sing it to me Judy Garland! Oops! hehehe ;)
