Although Ricky Reyes’ thoughts on the role of women and the nature of men, and his acceptance of the idea that being “tolerated is already enough,” are out of date when placed in a modern context, they are understandable at some level. He is, after all, a product of his generation and his experiences. Nevertheless, his accomplishments and his capacity to look back and help those whose are lacking in opportunities are worthy of praise and admiration.

I couldn’t help but compare Ricky Reyes to Oprah Winfrey. Both started out of nothing and faced enormous adversity (sexual orientation and skin color), but possessing sheer tenacity and purpose, they were able to achieve their full human potential as entrepreneurs, philanthropists and excellent role models. I truly applaud how they have used their incredible success to those in need (Ricky- those kids stricken with cancer, Oprah- establish a school in Africa) to such a degree that I am a firm believer that humans are also capable of goodness, when we are faced with a senseless war, genocide and terrorism nowadays.

Thank you, Migs, for introducing the Gay Idol series to your blog. You bring the right balance of sex, humor and humanity. That is the reason why you are part of my blogroll.

He’s an achiever and a role model for many, gay men or otherwise.

What he has achieved may be hard to duplicate considering the business context then and now. Nonetheless, hard work, perseverance, discipline, business focus and values are universal and timeless ingredients in any success story. The same ingredients that made Socorro Ramos (National Bookstore), Narda Capuyan (Narda’s) and other successful entrepreneurs reach their goals.

What is best with this documentary (about ricky reyes) is not the way he made it to the top but the manner by which he “descends from the top”. Reaching out and helping others prosper (especially fellow gay men) is truly remarkable especially within today’s gay community where discrimination and gay bashing between and among gay men are becoming a social stigma.

YES.
